Trigger Point Dry Needling

At Reger Physical Therapy, we believe in combining evidence-based practice with sound clinical judgment to provide optimal, individualized, and whole-body healing for every patient that walks through our doors. Of course, some of the people walking through our doors initially have a hard time doing so–on account of painful injuries or chronic health problems.

Among the therapeutic techniques used in our clinical practice, trigger point dry needling is one method that has been shown to offer many beneficial effects for people suffering from physical dysfunction.

What is trigger point dry needling?

Dry needling describes a treatment in which a thin needle or filament is inserted into a painful area on the body, generally over an injured or spasming muscle that contains trigger points. Dry needling elicits a “twitch response” or cramp-like feeling in a sensitive or injured muscle. This twitch response, while uncomfortable for some patients, promotes a biochemical and physiological response that can actually deactivate painful trigger points within the muscle. Typically, within 1 to 4 treatment sessions, a person experiences reduced pain, decreased muscle inflammation, and a restoration of normal muscle length and function.

As noted by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), dry needling can yield profound results when provided in conjunction with other physical therapy techniques and treatment modalities. These include therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, postural re-training, and neuromuscular re-education. When appropriately utilized as a part of an individualized treatment plan, dry needling offers benefits that complement care and enhance symptomatic and functional outcomes.

What conditions can trigger point dry needling treat?

In conjunction with other treatment modalities, trigger point dry needling has been successfully used to treat both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Muscle strains and spasms
  • Whiplash
  • Sports- or work-related injury
